Letter to Sesame Street

Imagine my surprise when reading to the girls when I found Cookie Monster munching on Celery!!!  What has this world come to?  Being the "letter writer" that I am I decided to write to Sesame Street about this issue... see excerpt below.  I'll post when (IF) I get a response from them!

Dear

Sesame Street

:

Having grown up with Oscar the Grouch, Big Bird, Cookie Monster and the rest of the gang on Sesame Street I relish the opportunity to now share these characters with my children.  Not only do they provide enjoyment and entertainment but learning opportunities as well.

However, recently when I was reading the book “Ding Dong It’s Elmo” to my adorable twin girls I was a bit shocked to see Cookie Monster munching on “celery”.  While I no doubt applaud Cookie Monster for making healthy lifestyle choices there are a few issues with his celery choice that I feel need to be addressed:   

• Namesake -  His given name is “Cookie Monster” – not “Celery Monster” and he needs to be true to his descriptive moniker. 
• Character Development - There was no character development or discussion about what lead Cookie Monster to eat celery over cookies.  If there needs to be a monster that devours celery, then perhaps a new character should be developed.
• Celery?  Really? - I mean, who really eats Celery?  If it weren’t for the occasional celery in my chicken salad to provide the textural crunch I would be celery free!  Perhaps a more appealing vegetable is in order, one that it is eaten by many…maybe zucchini?  Or squash?  Or green beans…he could be the Greenie Meanie…that sounds good, doesn’t it?
• Everything in Moderation:  Isn’t this what we are supposed to teach our children?  You can have cookies if you have your vegetables and protein too?  Perhaps Cookie Monster can still stick to eating cookies if he has his vegetables first.  Just saying!

I’m sure this letter will get absolutely no attention because I myself have been responsible for opening and sifting through mail at an organization (but it will be on my blog for all to see!)  On the off-chance it gets through to someone who cares about the sanctity of

characters I hope it falls into the lap of someone with an open mind.
